clarkbI've done a skim of the job logs from my 3.1 and 3.2 image builds to double check we're checking out the expected refs for jgit and that appears to be the case. I'll run through a 2.13 -> 3.2 upgrade locally with all those images this morning as a sanity check before we land the change and then upgrade review-test from 2.16 -> 3.215:04
clarkbit shouldn't take long since I don't have much data in my local instance, more I just have to get reoriented around my local test setup15:04

clarkbfungi: in local testing I was able to do the 2.16 notedb migration, 3.0 init, 3.1 init, 3.2 init and change reindex in one go so that may be a good process for us to test. Do you think there is any reason to stop on intermediate 3.x along the way?17:36
clarkbI'll update our etherpad with ^ details if you think that sounds reasonable17:37
*** ysandeep|pto is now known as ysandeep17:37
clarkbI do think we should try to get to 3.2 as it updates notedb handling to deal with orphaned entries better apparently. And that chagne reindex is done to deal with that too. Basically if we get to 3.2 then its easier upgrading past that point I think17:38
clarkbif we run 3.0 or 3.1 we could build up orphaned things that need cleaning which will make the 3.2 upgrade take longer when we get to it17:38
fungii don't personally know of any reason we'd want to run an outdated 3.x for any period in production17:43

clarkbfungi: thinking about your original question on https://review.opendev.org/#/c/756372/4 I'm beginning to wonder if we should stop trying to set the ref values ourselves and instead rely on git submodule update --init with local repos in place for reliability19:33
clarkbI think that will checkout the specific commits for the commit of gerrit we've specified19:33
clarkbcorvus: ^ you may have thoughts on that too since its related to that role you shared with me. I think for our use case we can simplify it to just using the commits gerrit is using?19:34
clarkbmordred: ^ do you know why we didn't do that in the first place? maybe beacuse we want to mix in its-storyboard and javamelody which aren't submodules?19:34
mordredclarkb: yeah - we need to mix those in - and also I believe we set the ref values so that depends-on will work19:35

paramitefungi, Hey Jeremy, I was pointed on you with my question. So I have signed OpenStack Individual Contributor License Agreement long time ago, I have backported some patch to Panko project (Part of Telemetry). I understand that it's not actual contribution to the project, but isn't that enough for being able to vote for PTL?20:51
clarkbparamite: openstack elections require you to maintain active foundation membership20:56
paramiteI see, well that I missed unfortunatelu20:57
clarkb(I believe that is a bylaws requirement? though fungi can clarify)20:57
paramite*unfortunately20:57
*** slaweq has quit IRC20:58
*** gmann_lunch is now known as gmann21:04
fungiparamite: yes, clarkb is correct. we note it here: https://governance.openstack.org/election/#id421:17
fungiparamite: but as clarkb indicates it stems from appendix 4 section 3i of the openstack foundation bylaws here: https://governance.openstack.org/election/#id421:18
fungier, sorry, here: https://www.openstack.org/legal/technical-committee-member-policy/21:18
fungiparamite: and the openstack technical committee charter here: https://governance.openstack.org/tc/reference/charter.html#voters-for-ptl-seats-apc21:19
fungitechnically it's something the technical committee could change in its charter, but that would make the ptl electorates no longer a subset of the tc electorate, which would make things a bit more complicated for election officials21:20
fungii'd be happy to update the election tooling to accommodate that change though if the tc decided it should be implemented21:20
paramiteWell, I'm not blaming or requesting a change .. I'm just surprised that in the past it was enough to have ICLA signed and being a contributor and then you were eligible to vote, but it's not true any more .. my bad21:22
fungiparamite: it has always been a requirement. however up until recently, you also had to join the openstack foundation as an individual member to be able to agree to the icla21:27
fungii and others were able to make the case for dropping that requirement so that people could contribute to projects without joining the foundation21:28
fungiso odds are you did join the osf at one point in the past, but if you don't vote in osf board member elections for two years in a row your foundation membership lapses (that's also mandated in the osf bylaws)21:28
fungiso the situation used to be that you had to join the osf to participate in elections (as a candidate or a voter) and to contribute code changes, but now only elections require osf membership and code contribution does not21:30
paramitethanks for explanation .. I really voted only when I received mail notification and did not notice it stopped comming. As I wrote above, my bad. I joined the foundation, so hopefully will have a chance to vote next time :)21:39
fungiparamite: you're welcome, and apologies for the lack of opportunity this time around21:48
paramitenp21:49
fungiparamite: also be on the lookout from e-mail from the osf, they're supposed to not only notify you about the board of directors elections they want members voting in, but also send an e-mail warning if your membership is at risk of expiring due to lack of participating in those board elections21:50
paramitewill do, thanks for info21:51
