14:01:43 #startmeeting ops-meetup-team 14:01:44 Meeting started Tue Mar 19 14:01:43 2019 UTC and is due to finish in 60 minutes. The chair is mihalis68_. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot. 14:01:46 Useful Commands: #action #agreed #help #info #idea #link #topic #startvote. 14:01:48 The meeting name has been set to 'ops_meetup_team' 14:01:56 #link https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/ops-meetups-team 14:02:08 ping mihalis68_, spotz, emccormick, mrhillsman, med_, smcginnis 14:02:18 o/ 14:02:25 o/ 14:02:52 o/ 14:03:10 Guten morgen 14:03:11 thanks for joining folks. This is the weekly ops meetups team meeting 14:03:30 the link I posted is the agenda. Not much there as we just completed the last meetup less than two weeks ago 14:03:54 #link https://superuser.openstack.org/articles/takeaways-from-the-latest-openstack-ops-meetup/ 14:04:14 this is Frank Kloeker's writeup of the event. I provided comments but for whatever reason they didn't make it into the article 14:04:35 hi 14:04:39 it should also have thanks Erik McCormick for being another organiser and moderating some of the sessions including the more dense ones 14:04:43 hi shintaro 14:04:49 sorry I'm late 14:05:05 no worries 14:05:20 and I didn't realize that the DST has ended last week. 14:05:34 I think most of the actions previously recorded are moot as we completed another succesful event 14:05:38 #topic actions 14:05:57 shintaro: We should really end DST. ;) 14:05:58 berline meet-up complete :) 14:06:07 o/ 14:06:35 We had a successful event, turnout was around 30 and we packed a lot in 14:06:47 I heard from my team members that the event was successful 14:06:51 we made the timetable fluid this time, learning from the way PTG is done. I think that worked 14:07:13 we also did not add sessions that were merely suggested. They needed some +1s and a moderator or they remained mere suggestions 14:07:16 that was also good I think 14:07:45 thanks for the feedback, Shintaro. It was obvious with hindsight that masahito was in much better shape this time than in Tokyo. He told me he was sick that time 14:07:57 any other reports on prior actions? 14:08:18 #topic berlin wrap-up 14:08:30 that's great to hear mihalis68_ 14:08:49 we saw a great innovation in Berlin that I want to share. I asked for volunteer moderator for the arch lightning talks on day 1 14:08:54 we made it the end of day session 14:09:22 our moderator used an app with an alarm bell to give each speaker a strict time ration, this worked great 14:09:33 and finishing off the day this way was so popular people wanted something similar for day 2 14:09:45 so day 2 we had ops war stories lightning talks. 14:10:10 the same moderator made it even more fun. he asked for a brief title for the story but no details so that each one was a surprise 14:10:11 with voting goodness 14:10:23 he gave each one a time slot and then asked people to score it! (as Erik just said) 14:10:28 this gamified it, and was superb 14:11:02 sounds fun 14:11:18 #link https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/BER19-OPS-WAR-STORIES 14:11:37 I came 3rd :) 14:12:28 another think I think worked was starting off easy on day 2. This was a tip from Tom Fifield. I started off with a discussion of recent foundation changes - new name, wider mission, renamed summit, non-openstack projects etc 14:13:02 interestingly the operators present were mostly ok with all the changes, but also fairly unfamiliar with any of it 14:13:14 Did any forum topics come up out of the event? 14:13:29 no experience with airship, zuul or kata, and very little awareness of starlingx 14:13:38 There was some poo-poo'ing of Kata but I think more from lack of understanding 14:14:07 erik put in some placeholders for the summit. As discuss previously there was no time to digest what we learned in berlin before the deadline, which is just nonsense and made me pretty irritated 14:14:08 mostly around the fact that they're considered virtual machines. Perhaps a marketing consideration 14:14:25 there was some hostility to kata containers but also some welcoming 14:15:06 spotz I think we can do our regular ceph talk and ops meetup discussion 14:15:18 before we get fully into talking about denver, I wanted to just include some of the less-great stuff about berlin 14:15:20 beyond that I'm thinking of carrying over the lightning talks and war stories sessions 14:15:45 emccormick: Ok can you get the info to speakersupport? So 1 Ceph, 1 meetup report, and 1 war-stories? 14:15:52 we had a low turnout and I think it was mostly because berlin was difficult to get flights and accomodation for, given the large commercial conference there same week 14:16:16 spotz yes, crafting an email which I will flesh out after this discussion 14:16:21 I mean, 30 was much better than we thought it would be a week beforehand, but we had 50 in mexico and 100 in tokyo 14:16:30 emccormick: Thanks:) 14:16:45 mihalis68_: And the fact most people might have just been there making it hard to justify 14:16:47 secondly erik and I had had to run the entire technical agenda. the hosts didn't seem to be concerned or even involved in that 14:16:53 For the room setup the number worked well I think 14:17:20 it did, but with a week to go we had about 17 people and no agenda 14:17:54 I don't mind doing it this time as I was supported by my company in both time and travel expenses, but without us both it wouldn't have worked 14:18:03 There's just something disorganized about Berlin:( 14:18:40 we tried to get any clues about how to better reach out to the operators inside organisations running openstack but didn't get any real feedbacjk 14:19:08 Social media spam was the main suggestion 14:19:19 I think for future events we need to insist that the hosting organisation is part of the technical organising group 14:19:21 it seems many in the room just don't pay much attention to the ML 14:19:28 right 14:19:39 agree 14:20:06 I hate to criticize the generous host but I don't think they put forward many topics nor moderated many, if any 14:20:15 Any feedback as to whether it would have been better as more Open Infra, though it was heavy into Ceph 14:20:16 someone suggested an OSOPS twitter account 14:20:33 so maybe this team needs to get all 21st century and whatnot 14:21:07 Most seem to want it to be mostly Openstack with related things as they pertain to Openstack 14:21:27 There wasn't a lot of clamoring for generalized Open Infra talk 14:21:42 I like the idea of an OSOPS twitter account 14:22:00 the tricky question would be ownership. 14:22:22 the foundation squelches unofficial use of the brand and logo 14:22:24 This team in general I think shoudl run it 14:22:35 We can share the creds among the folks in this team. 14:22:36 I would suggest the UC keep the credentials 14:23:00 Oh, that could work too. But we would want a few non-UC folks to be able to post things. 14:23:11 the attendees did seem potentially willing to follow a low-spam feed of some kind 14:23:18 But if we have to just as someone on UC to post, that's not too bad. 14:23:27 yeah I just mean tie it to an @openstack.org account owned by the UC 14:23:28 *just ask 14:23:38 ++ 14:23:57 I think UC anticipated supporting these events a lot more (back in Denver) than really happened 14:24:03 then if someone here just goes dark or gets hit by a bus we don't lose the account 14:25:07 spotz can you take that idea to the rest of the UC and discuss? 14:25:08 I'm not 100% sure that a twitter account owned by UC would actually be maintained 14:25:31 emccormick: Can do 14:25:35 basically Ops meetup team runs a twitter feed that is officially owned by the UC and is tied to an @openstack.org email address 14:25:47 we will do the (minimal) tweeting 14:25:49 We could just do a shared login 14:26:00 yeah 14:26:20 if they are ok with that, sounds like it could work 14:26:38 I'm no twitter savant, so any suggestions on how to admin it better are welcome 14:26:45 I was granted access to the mexico city eventbrite for example 14:28:21 any more comments on the berlin event? 14:28:44 I left with a persistent craving for gummy bears 14:29:09 I was annoyed that they asked us for comment, then said "oh look, you're already mentioned, we don't need your comment" and then when I sent some anyway didn't put any in 14:30:10 I guess we just need to write the article next time. If it's at your place, then no problem :) 14:30:13 oh well can't be helped now 14:30:20 #topic denver (forum) 14:30:23 I'm pretty sure that's how the actual openstack account is the foundation uses but can verify 14:30:33 I dont think I can make denver at all 14:30:48 :( 14:30:52 :( 14:31:15 :( 14:31:25 the nice thing is the meetups team doesnt have to lift a finger to make the event happen in general 14:31:30 it's just the forum topics 14:31:49 I've done ceph talks at several, but erik knows that stuff just as well or better 14:32:09 It mostly runs itself anyway if Sage shows up 14:32:28 eh I dont really agree. he's very careful not to make it his session 14:32:29 In Sydney I was up front for about 2 minutes and then just sat down. It was great 14:32:43 ok didn't make that one 14:32:44 oh well people just asked non-stop questions 14:33:02 yeah that's why it was me doing it. Slacker 14:33:03 :D 14:33:10 so weird... in berlin the room was attentive but quiet and it became quite presentation-like 14:33:58 and it was full! 14:34:14 so I suggest these: Ceph + Openstack, Ops Meetups + Community gathering, Ops War Stories, and Ops Arch Show and Tell 14:34:23 that will fill our allocated blocks 14:34:59 I would take it to the ML but we don't have time and they won't see it anyway :P 14:35:04 seems good to me. I am glad that we've made ceph a fixture 14:35:16 Not very open of us, but I don't think it can be helped at this point 14:35:35 certainly for us moving from a mix of storage choices to all shared block storage on ceph was great 14:35:57 we're at the point where if the meetups team doesn't make decisions and act, nothing at all happens 14:36:11 you can still inform the ML of what we're doing 14:36:20 Maybe I'll shoot a message out as a formality and share what I"m proposing here 14:36:24 just not "hey ML what do you think" and then waiting 14:36:27 allow a day for comment 14:36:28 yeah 14:36:31 *nod* 14:36:42 Only 3 slots:) 14:37:01 ah ok 14:37:02 combine war stories and arch maybe? 14:37:08 well we can have a general combined yeah 14:37:17 Ops lightning talks 14:37:30 👍 14:37:45 sounds great Ops LT 14:37:55 this means there wont be an ops docs session 14:38:11 admittedly there's little progress there 14:38:15 I'll bring it up during the meetup session 14:38:36 ok 14:38:55 I'm trying to make it a more Ops Community Gathering sort of thing to encourage better attendance 14:39:06 Maybe spotz can get me stickers :D 14:39:09 that's a good idea 14:39:21 oh yeah, stickers. I have a big bag of ops meetup stickers 14:39:36 I guess either DT or the foundation ordered them 14:39:41 What am I getting stickers for?:) 14:39:46 This wa more people can learn of the new twitter if we do it, and get a broader audience for meetup talk 14:40:07 Ops community session 14:40:09 welcome jamesmcarthur! 14:40:24 maybe some of those spiffy Ops Meetup stickers we had in Berlin. I dunno where those came from 14:40:44 that's what I'm saying, I have a WHOLE BUNCH of those 14:40:52 mihaliis68_ You can send those to me 14:40:59 since you're abandoning us! 14:41:10 *taunt* 14:41:18 *grimace* 14:41:25 anyone else want some? 14:41:29 it's a lot 14:41:33 hundreds I think 14:41:42 certainly many dozen 14:41:43 wowza 14:41:59 mihalis68_: If you want to send me the stickers I can take them with 14:42:09 we can distribute them in Denver Summit 14:42:36 I"m happy to be a mule as well ;) 14:42:45 speaking of... Have y'all had a chance to think about topics for the three Ops placeholder sessions? 14:42:57 yep already worked that out 14:42:59 I'd be happy to update the sessions if you can send them along. 14:43:08 I haven't fully decided NOT to go to denver, but if I do I'll be late. We're visiting england, I need to see my dad who's not in good shape 14:43:24 back on the day that I would otherwise fly out 14:43:27 I'm going to do a mailing list thing as a formality so we're not accused of lack of openness 14:43:34 :+1 14:43:38 👍 14:44:04 but 99% certain it'll be Ceph, Ops Meetup / Cummunity, and lightning talks 14:44:17 jimmy the sessons are "ceph with openstack" "ops lightning talks" and "ops community" 14:44:18 snap 14:44:32 mihalis68_: Sorry about your dad and much more important 14:44:36 jamesmcarthur Will email you more detailed descriptions for them 14:45:24 emccormick: perfect, thanks - along with moderators if you can 14:45:30 I think that's it for Denver, except I'd like to ask someone to step forward and be the benevolent dictator of denver for ops 14:45:43 probably me, me, and me 14:45:50 yes I nominate you then 14:45:58 #topic meetup number 2 2019 14:46:00 I'll be there, too 14:46:01 roger that. I'll put the titles in as place holders. 14:46:05 maybe shintaro wants the community or lightning talks one? 14:46:07 *nudge* 14:46:26 shintaro do you want some stickers for your local colleagues? 14:46:37 can we flip moderators later? 14:47:01 thanks mihalis68_, yes I love to 14:47:06 anyway for meetup #2 I don't have offiical news but things are progressing. I haven't been able to catch up with the approval person as he had a bad accident and is now partially titanium 14:47:10 he's back at work, but from home 14:47:13 emccormick, yes, I can moderate 14:47:27 shintaro preference for which one? 14:48:03 either is fine 14:48:49 LT seems fun, though 14:49:07 sold! 14:49:11 jamesmcarthur Put Shintaro down for the LIghtning Talks one 14:49:18 will do 14:49:29 great 14:49:45 I wonder if we should write an article about berlin too? 14:49:48 I'll skype Chris into the other one and stick him up on the big screen 14:49:48 :D 14:50:28 mihalis68_ maybe we could do one that's more generic, about the meetups in general 14:50:29 let me rephrase that. Is there any interest in me pulling together some thoughts about organising berlin? Could just go on our wiki pages, no need to trouble superuser 14:50:53 I think maybe both? 14:51:09 ok 14:51:25 #action mihalis68_ to write down thoughts on berlin and see what it leads to 14:51:51 #topic any other business 14:52:01 10 minutes left. Anything else on people's minds? 14:52:03 Any update on 2019 #2? 14:52:13 Oh, sorry. 14:52:16 heheh 14:52:23 I got distracted and just realized I missed some scrollback. 14:52:25 no worries 14:52:31 you coming to denver, sean? 14:52:48 or maybe that should read "going" if I'm not 14:53:14 Yep, I will be there Sat to Sat, so that should be fun. 14:53:24 phew, sounds very very tiring 14:53:39 Later in the week should be very interesting. 14:53:52 As far as my ability to hold coherent conversations. 14:54:24 this is the heaviest schedule for a while - summit, ptg and forum 14:54:48 Nothing else from me for today. 14:54:52 I notice the keynotes are very abbreviated this time 14:55:00 kind of disappointing when I read them 14:55:03 I haven't even looked at the schedule yet. 14:55:20 There was some negative feedback about the keynotes in Berlin. 14:55:22 ok, think everyone needs to get going - spidey sense tells me it's time for 14:55:22 I wonder if that's why. 14:55:24 last call 14:55:33 Seems we should put more effort into making those useful. 14:55:36 oh intersting. what did peopel say? 14:56:04 I heard one or two comments about them not being useful and not as good quality as the attendee(s) expected. 14:56:09 I thought they were OK. 14:56:09 Two days of keynotes in a 3 day summit was too much 14:56:14 that was my only keynote comment 14:56:39 too much time taken away from more specialized content including the forum 14:56:49 True 14:57:07 guess the fine-tuning needs to continue 14:57:34 thanks to everyone for attending this week. I'll look into whether I can get to denver even if missing the start 14:57:45 but erik is the BDFL 14:57:54 ... for denver! 14:58:06 #endmeeting
