osa@openstack: Hey Guys, is it possible to utilize ceilometer to monitor statistics from within an openstack vm, for example measuring ram usage of a specific process. Or do the supported metrics only pertain to monitoring statistics about the guest vm itself?15:17
larsksosa: ceilometer isn't really designed to do that. Monitoring metrics like that within an instance require installing software inside the instance, so it's not really possible to do from ceilometer's perspective.15:28
osalarsks: Thanks for the response. Would it be possible to establish communication between a service like prometheus running inside the vm and ceilometer itself?15:31
larsksYou could probably arrange for ceilometer to send metrics to prometheus, but not the other way around (because ceilometer is primarily just for gathering metrics and then delivering them somewhere else for persistent storage).15:32
larsksAnd you probably wouldn't configure ceilometer in your openstack environment to send metrics to promethus in a vm running in that environment (because what if that vm goes away?)15:32
osalarsks: Understood. So what I'm primarily looking for is a way of autoscaling vms in openstack based on specific processes stats running inside the vms. I've also looked into openstack monasca, but I've been having some issues setting up the containers using openstack ansible15:34
larsksI've done autoscaling with Heat in the past, and that worked by providing you with a URL that could be used to signal autoscaling events.  I'm pretty sure that mechanism is now deprecated, though.15:36
larsksMaybe someone else around here has some clever idea.  Hang around a bit, I guess?15:37
osalarsks: Yea, I may look into whether autoscaling with the webhook url provided by heat is still possible. I have openstack queens deployed. And yes, I'll hang around to see if anyone else has some suggestions. Thanks for the info!15:39
