gmannFYI everyone, Coming Oct PTG will be virtual 100% https://lists.openinfra.dev/pipermail/foundation-board/2022-August/000659.html18:09
gmannannounced in openstack-discuss ML also18:11
knikollaoh :/18:40
mnaser_diablo_rojo: is there any transparency behind the reasoning why that was done?19:04
mnaser_a $150 registration fee refund is nice, but there's hotel and flights that were booked that are not cheap19:05
apricemnaser_ there were a few factors at play, including the amount of people who were unable to travel to the PTG. When looking at the total number, it was becoming clear that it was not a critical mass to ensure that the PTG conversations would satisfy people who were able to attend in person. 19:34
apricewe tried to make the decision as quickly as possible and as soon as we were hearing feedback, including the recent TC poll that showed that half of the TC would not be in attendance. 19:34
mnaser_aprice: fair enough, that adds quite a bit of context19:35
apricei do apologize that it comes at a point when some travel had already been booked and if there's anything we can do to help there, please let me know. 19:35
mnaser_i didn’t think the TC poll had a big impact so I kinda just ignored it when I realized it was TC oh19:35
mnaser_Only*19:36
dansmithyeah unfortunately there have been a number of people waiting for travel to see if others would travel, and I'm sure the opposite - already booked travel19:36
apricethat wasn't the only factor by far19:36
dansmithbut I was also wanting to ask how the registration numbers were looking so far19:36
apricethere are visa issues that were brought to our attention as well that helped inform the decision. 19:36
dansmithwhich I assume is the biggest indicator19:36
apricedansmith: the current registration numbers were not matching the pace at which we have had for any previous in-person PTG. 19:37
fungithe announcement also said something about feedback from sponsors19:37
mnaser_Anyways, nothing we can do about it now other than move forward and figure out how to make the vptg better because I feel pretty burned out from that lol19:37
apricewe also were struggling to get sponsor interest 19:37
dansmithaprice: ack, figured, yeah19:37
mnaser_So maybe gather our efforts there to make it a better virtual PTG rather than deal with the past19:37
apricewell and I do think that the in-person PTG serves a critical purpose and I want to work closer with the community as we start planning for 2023 so we can get a better indication ahead of time 19:37
aprice++ mnaser_19:38
mnaser_I’ll be slaughtered for this19:38
apriceuh oh19:38
mnaser_but running a vptg in a discord19:38
mnaser_Would be actually19:38
mnaser_So smooth and easy19:38
* dansmith wields his machete19:38
mnaser_Easy rooms, easy to jump in and out, text chat in there for voice19:39
apricewe are open to ways to make it easier 19:39
dansmithI actually have no opinion, I was just invited to slaughter :)19:39
mnaser_dansmith: bahaha19:39
apricehahahaha19:39
apricefair19:39
mnaser_it would really be a pretty nice and easy setup to manage. Easy way to ping people.19:40
mnaser_and then everything goes read only post PTG19:40
mnaser_And discord can be used from a browser too if someone doesn’t want to actually set it up on their machine19:41
mnaser_I just feel there will be a vocal minority that will be super against it because “non free” and kill any momentum or attempts.. unless someone joins me to think it’s a good idea too :)19:41
dansmithno doubt19:42
fungiyeah, those crazies who think software freedom important ;)19:43
fungibut to your point, we already provide zoom as a default, and it's proprietary. a big up side to virtual ptg is that teams can decide for themselves if they consider free tools important, or whether they'll choose something else19:45
fungiso if some teams want to use discord instead of irc/jitsi/etherpad, they totally can19:46
mnaser_yeah, it’s just for example zoom is an ok system but it doesn’t feel as centralized, not easy to ping people, chat logs go into the void etc19:47
mnaser_let me think a bit about this and I’ll nag aprice :)19:47
apricehaha deal :) 19:48
fungii mean, discord won't be centralized either if half the attendees choose to use open platforms to meet19:48
fungiif the main up-side to discord is that you're going to force everyone to use it, then that's almost certainly a non-starter19:48
fungiyou can ping people in irc and its chat logs persist, fwiw19:49
mnaser_fungi: Well, it could be a choice like zoom is.19:51
fungiyep, but then you lose the reason you said you prefer it (that you can ping everyone through it)20:15
fungialso, having used discord quite a bit myself, i can attest that's not really true anyway. when i use it i open a browser tab to it and talk to people. as soon as i'm done talking to them i close that browser tab. but to a great extent i consider "everyone can ping me" to be a bug rather than a feature. i'm also one of those people who leaves my phone turned off until i want to place a call20:18
dansmithfungi: lol (phone)21:18
fungii also don't have to charge it very often at all!21:19
