quicklockhello swift team, I'm new to swift (and openstack) and am having a problem setting up a distributed swift cluster. Here's my setup; two datacenters (DC1 and DC2) in Singapore and Tokyo. Both of them have complete OpenStack deployments. They each have a set of services like cinder, swift, glance, nova, neutron, and of course keystone. Both keystones are setup for LDAP auth against a single LDAP server.15:11
quicklockI would like swift to replicate across from DC1 to DC2 and have applications run in both places.15:11
quicklockI'm not sure whether swift can be configured for this; if yes would someone please point me to some docs I could read. thx15:11

frankie64I am trying to get openstack swift running, i have now built 2 clean ubuntu VM's 16 and 14, but still runn across the same error that i cannot get around.  could really use some help16:24
frankie64when i run the unitests i get errors with liberasurecode, not being able to fond libraries16:25
tdasilvafrankie64: do you know what version of libec you have installed? it's probably earlier then 1.5...those msgs have been fixed in 1.5.016:27
frankie64how do i check that16:27
tdasilvafrankie64: those msgs can be ignored, but I'd suggest trying to upgrade to 1.5 as there were a number of more important fixes that went into that16:27
timburketry `dpkg -l | grep erasurecode`16:28
frankie641.1.0-216:28
frankie64ok so how do i upgrade that16:28
frankie64its what came with th ubuntu install16:29
tdasilvaonovy: are you still doing packaging for libec?16:29
tdasilvafrankie64: I think for Ubuntu you might need to build from source16:29
timburkematches what i'm seeing for 14.04 -- and eep! looks like 16.04's the same (or nearly)! https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/liberasurecode-dev16:30
frankie6417 apparently has 1.516:30
timburkethat's good at least16:31
tdasilvaah cool!16:31
timburkeyeah, i'd say build from source -- it shouldn't be too bad16:31
acolesquicklock in case you come back - https://docs.openstack.org/swift/latest/admin_guide.html#geographically-distributed-swift-considerations16:32
timburke`git clone https://git.openstack.org/openstack/liberasurecode` (or download & extract a tarball) make sure you've got build-essential, zlib1g-dev, autoconf, and automake installed (and maybe libtool? or maybe that's mainly for the tests, i forget...), then `./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && sudo make install`16:35
timburkemight want to uninstall the system package first, though16:35
frankie64thanks16:36
timburkequicklook: there's also https://docs.openstack.org/swift/latest/overview_global_cluster.html16:38

esnyderGood morning all (or TZ appropriate greeting). Can anyone point me to info on how the transaction ids in swift logs are generated? I mean, they are all tx(first something)-(second something), where (second something) doesn't look unique across requests. Does it encode any info? If first something the hash of anything in particular, or a uuid, or...? Any tips appreciated.18:26
*** kallenp has joined #openstack-swift18:29
notmynameesnyder: yep. let me find a link18:29
*** kallenp has left #openstack-swift18:29
notmynameesnyder: high-level, it's at https://github.com/openstack/swift/blob/master/swift/common/middleware/catch_errors.py#L36. note the optional trans_id_extra. eg you can use that for specifying a region or cluster in case you aggregate logs or something18:30
notmynamehttps://github.com/openstack/swift/blob/master/swift/common/utils.py#L524 actually generates the transaction id18:31
notmynamethe second part you asked about is a timestamp18:31

mahujaHey, I am stuck. I would like to configure mem_diskfile.py as a backend on the object-server. Before this I was writing to a drive /srv/node/device0 and the config worked fine. I want to replace this device with an in memory call to a python dict. I changed the swift entry on object-server touse = egg:swift#mem_object. That gives me a 503. What do I need to change on proxy-server, account-server so that it recongnizes that it20:55
mahujawith an in memory server? Do I need to remake the rings? If I do need to remake the rings, how should they be made?20:55
*** amrith has joined #openstack-swift21:02
notmynamemahuja: heh, I was hoping someone else in here may have a better idea. it's been a long time since I've looked at the mem_diskfile (it's mostly used for testing)21:05
mahujaI think I have to somehow to tell the proxy that there is no device.. I think I am screwing that up.. It is probably an easy enough fix.. Something simple perhaps, I just don't know it yet.21:06
mahujaIs there no readme or config page on how to configure this mem_diskfile?21:07
mahujaThere is this: https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2015/02/03/using-multiple-backends-in-openstack-swift21:11
tdasilvamahuja: do you know where the 503 is coming from? any logs?21:14
mahujaYes I do have logs: On the proxy-server I see the following  ERROR with Object server... :6200/device0 re: Trying to HEAD /v1/....21:16
mahujaThe device0 is a local on disk filesystem, so it shouldn't be trying to get there.21:16
mahuja ERROR with Object server ... re: Trying to HEAD /v1/21:18
mahujaObject HEAD returning 503 for []21:18

tdasilvamahuja: did not have to remake rings or anything like that21:24
mahujahmmm tdasilva will retry a few things.21:30
tdasilvamahuja: changes should not be required on the proxy/account/container. btw: account and container will continue writing to disk21:31

zaitcevReminds me again why we started using that requests shit?23:42
zaitcevThere was something about some RFC compliance or maybe 100 Expect processing...23:42
zaitcevOh, actually!23:43
zaitcevIt's coming back to me. It was because of some supposed handling of TLS certificates.23:43
zaitcevI knew it could not end well even back then23:43
timburkeyup -- we weren't validating certs properly https://github.com/openstack/python-swiftclient/commit/b182112 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/python-swiftclient/+bug/119978323:46
openstackLaunchpad bug 1199783 in python-swiftclient "Missing SSL cert check in Swift python client (CVE-2013-6396)" [High,Fix released] - Assigned to Thomas Leaman (thomas-leaman)23:46
timburkeoh yeah -- timur's back in town! i can nudge him to remember what's going on with connection pooling...23:47
zaitcevWell, his solution was to make swiftclient to pass through options to requests.23:48
zaitcevAt this point we're probably too invested to do anything else.23:48
