tarantoolhello everyone!12:22
slunkadnotmyname: hello12:22
slunkadtarantool: is a applicant for the outreachy program and is interested in applying to swift12:22
tarantoolI was wondering if I may work on the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/keystone/+bug/161449312:23
openstackLaunchpad bug 1614493 in OpenStack Identity (keystone) "openstack endpoint delete failing with error not found" [Medium,Triaged] - Assigned to Annapoornima Koppad (annakoppad)12:23
slunkadtarantool: that is the keystone bug, I think you should paste the swift bug you found.12:23
tarantoolslunkad: oh, apologies, wrong bug12:24
tarantoolslunkad: this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/swift/+bug/155179112:24
openstackLaunchpad bug 1551791 in OpenStack Object Storage (swift) "First Contribution to Swift needs pointers to "what to work on"" [Wishlist,New] - Assigned to Pablo (pcaruana)12:24
tarantoolslunkad: it hasn't been updated for some time12:24
slunkadtarantool: yup, you can even mail the person it is assigned to and ask if you can work on it..12:25
tarantoolslunkad: I'll do that; currently johannes has discovered another bug I could work on12:27
slunkadtarantool: ok12:28

tarantoolnotmyname: hello!16:23

notmynametarantool: I just saw your conversation from a few hours ago. you were asking about outreachy or bugs or ...?16:24
tarantoolnotmyname: yes, pretty much about all of it :-)16:25
tarantoolnotmyname: I'm applying to Outreachy's OpenStack, unfortunately, pretty much last minute16:25
notmynametarantool: do you have a project in mind?16:25
tarantoolnotmyname: so I wanted to know whether there are any beginner-friendly bugs I could work on16:25
tarantoolnotmyname: I want to apply either to Swift or to Keystone16:26
notmynamehttps://bugs.launchpad.net/swift/+bugs?field.tag=low-hanging-fruit16:26
tarantoolnotmyname: yes, I did that search, and pretty much all bugs are already taken16:27
notmynamehow much have you used swift or keystone so far? and how much have you looked at their respective code?16:27
*** StingRay_ has left #openstack-swift16:27
tarantoolnotmyname: frankly, not at all, I wanted to try it out16:28
notmynameok16:29
tarantoolnotmyname: I'm still working on getting DevStack running16:30
notmynameswift and keystone do very different things. swift is all about storing data and keystone is an auth system. does one of those sound more interesting?16:30
tarantoolnotmyname: the first launch has crashed as my VM didn't have enough RAM16:30
notmynameI'd recommend https://github.com/swiftstack/vagrant-swift-all-in-one as a simple way to get a swift dev environment set up16:30
tarantoolnotmyname: thank you! I'll try rebuilding my VM first (with more memory, it's libvirt-based)16:32
tarantoolnotmyname: if that fails, then I'll ry installing Vagrant16:33
notmynamethat vagrant swift all in one (vSAIO) is based on the instructions at http://docs.openstack.org/developer/swift/development_saio.html16:33
tarantoolnotmyname: actually, I find both of them interesting (swift and keystone, that is)16:34
notmynametarantool: any chance you'll be in barcelona next week at the openstack summit?16:34
tarantoolnotmyname: no, unfortunately not...But I've heard of it.16:35
notmynameno worries16:35
notmynameso I think swift is pretty cool (not surprising since we're talking here in the -swift channel), and I'd love to help you get involved contributing16:36
notmyname"storage" is a pretty big topic though. what's interesting to you about it? making apps work with it? distributed systems? low-level filesystem and storage media? network protocols? performance/optimization work? docs?16:38
notmyname(there's a ton you could jump in on)16:38
tarantoolnotmyname: well pretty much anything that's beginner friendly, as I'm one16:39
notmynameheh, ok :-)16:40
notmynamewhat's current experience? are you currently employed as a dev? background in ops? student? what's your story?16:40
notmynamehow well do you know python? do you know golang?16:41
tarantoolnotmyname: some Python (I did an online course on it), some Git, and can navigate through most Linux distros at a basic level16:41
notmynameok, cool16:41
tarantoolalso vi, some networks, ssh16:42
tarantoolnot a student currently; as a student, I worked in IT support (1st/2nd level)16:42
tarantoolyou gotta start where you gotta start, I guess16:43
*** rcernin has quit IRC16:44
notmynameyeah, that's great16:44
tarantoolI know,I know, no greatness here16:44
tarantoolI'm no rockstar16:45
notmynamedon't say that. aside from "rockstars" having a nasty habit of trashing hotel rooms, most of the best devs I know simply think hard, put in a ton of work, and stick with problems until they're fixed. and most of that comes with practice16:46
notmynameand in that sense, fixing a nasty concurrency-in-distrubuted-systems kind of bugs isn't too different from improving tests and docs. all of it is important and valuable. so stick with whatever you're doing and do the best you can. IMO that's a "rockstar" dev (although I don't like the term)16:48
tarantoolyes; even if I don't get accepted I'll stick with learning more about OpenStack16:49
notmynametarantool: if you're interested in picking up some work in swift (yay!) the the best thing to do right now is get a swift dev environment set up (the SAIO)16:51
notmynamestarting with devstack is ok, but devstack isn't a great place to start with for swift (it has a lot of stuff for other openstack projects that aren't needed for swift and it doesn't have a great swift default config)16:52
notmynametarantool: the second most important thing you can do is to keep being involved here in IRC16:53
notmynametarantool: what time zone are you in?16:53
*** slunkad has joined #openstack-swift16:56
tarantoolnotmyname: I'm in UTC +216:57
notmynameok16:57
tarantoolnotmyname: I'll keep reading the posts here, even if I'm not accepted in this round16:57
tarantoolnotmyname: which is very likely to happen, as I joined too late16:58
notmynamealthough we do have several people in here from EU time zones, most activity is during north american business hours (eg I'm in san francisco)16:58
tarantoolnotmyname: ok16:59
notmynametarantool: but perhaps you could talk to mahatic. she did an outreachy project with swift a while back and she's one of the openstack coordinators for outreachy now. however, it's 10:30pm for her right now. might need to wait until her tomorrow to chat17:00
notmynametarantool: I've got a pressing engagement that just came up (a 6 year old asking to play some video games), so I gotta run17:01
notmynametarantool: good luck with the outreachy app, and please feel free to stick around and ask questions. I'd love to have you join in on making swift awesome(r)17:01
tarantoolnotmyname: thank you very much!17:04
