pdardeaunotmyname: smurke has some association with gnocci (he's on ceilometer) and might be able to answer some questions17:29
smurkegnocchi is a timeseries as a database. where it gathers data and associate timestamp to it. It is mainly used for archiving the data. It also does aggregation over the data17:30
smurkeit is used as dispatcher for ceilomter.17:30
*** catintheroof has quit IRC17:30
pdardeaunotmyname: ^17:30
notmynameI don't understand what "dispatcher for ceilometer" means17:31
smurkeit has different drivers (plugins) to store the archived data.. ceph and mongo are widely used. There is work going on having swift as a storage also17:31
smurkenotmyname: ceilometer uses gnocchi. where data from ceilometer is dispatched to gnocchi instead of storing into any DB17:33
smurkeand gnocchi then process the data according to the archive policy set by the operator and stores it in Mongo (most operators prefer using it)17:34
openstackgerritMerged openstack/swift: swift-ring-builder output corrected for ipv6  https://review.openstack.org/31938717:35

tdasilvasmurke: by before, i mean, before gnocchi was introduced...17:36
smurkeThere is a concept called dispatcher where the data gathered by ceilometer is sent to. It depends upon the operator whether they want to store data directly to db.17:37
smurkeBut bcoz of ceilometer being slow as it used to handle huge amount of data. Gnocchi project came into picture where data is being taged with a timestamp (like timestamp: value ) and then stored into the db with an archive policy. Due to ths the performance of the querries that were made on the Data were optimized17:39
smurketdasilva: yeah. It is not a hard requirement to use gnocchi17:39
smurkebut for having optimized performance for the queries that are made operators might want to use ceilometer + gnocchi + DB , tdasilva17:40
*** vint_bra has joined #openstack-swift17:40
smurkeceilometer still can store data into the DB instead of sending to gnocchi. Both projects can work independentatly17:41
tdasilvasmurke: ok, i think i'm starting to understand. what confused me is that I always heard that ceilometer did not perform well and it was always tied to mongo, so I was surprised when you said that gnochi was just using mongo17:43
tdasilvabut it also seems to do with the way data is being stored ???? does that sound right??17:43

tdasilvapdardeau: hi, how do you build the man pages?19:29
notmyname`man path/to/manpage/file` will let you look at them. I have no idea how to write them from scratch19:30
pdardeautdasilva: did notmyname answer your question? is that what you meant?19:45
tdasilvapdardeau, notmyname: so when I run tox -e docs I see a swift.1 under docs/build/man19:47
tdasilvabut that's it19:47
tdasilva'man path/to/manpage/file' oh I can run this command pointing to the source file19:47
tdasilvagot it19:47
pdardeautdasilva: tbh, i'm not familiar with what tox does for docs. but as notmyname mentioned, i use19:48
pdardeau'man path/to/man/file' to view it19:48

sgundur1hey pdardeau19:55
pdardeausgundur1: can you provide some details on what tox does for man pages?19:56
sgundur1about the manpages ; as notmyname pointed out man path/to/manfile is the one to check how manpages look19:56
tdasilvasgundur1, pdardeau: sounds good, that worked for me. I'm guessing build_sphinx builds the man page swift.1 from the rst files...just a guess19:58
pdardeausgundur1: right. but what role does tox play (if any) wrt manpages?19:58
sgundur1tox doesn't build the /doc/manpages but does so for .rst files and the opbook19:59
sgundur1swift/doc/build/man19:59
sgundur1$ gzip swift-dispersion-report.120:00
sgundur1$ sudo cp swift-dispersion-report.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/20:00
sgundur1$ man swift-dispersion-report20:00
sgundur1the linux way would be something like above20:00
*** catintheroof has joined #openstack-swift20:00
sgundur1tox -e docs didn't build manpages hence the pep8 passes with tox20:01
pdardeausgundur1: thx for explanation20:03
sgundur1not sure if that helps @tdasilva20:03
sgundur1:)20:03
tdasilvasgundur1: it absolutely did!!! :) thank you20:03
sgundur1ok :)20:04
