hrouInteresting !  Technically reads should be no slower (unlike writes that may need to read + write if there's overlapping content) so it may come down to how fragmented the data is.00:04
hroubtw, in case you didn't see it, this is a benchmark of the seagate  8tb smr: http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_archive_hdd_review_8tb00:05
notmynamehrou: thanks00:08

notmynamehrou: actually, on a disk that has had a lot of concurrent writes, SMR drives are likely to be much slower on reads. sequential LBAs won't be sequential physically, so that results in a lot of seeks00:10
notmynameI suspect my 4k reads are fast because that can always be served with a single seek. like I said, next up is larger objects00:10

hrouRight !  that was my 'fragmented' comment, the more concurrent workload a higher chance that'll happen;  I bet you're right though, it'll be interesting with the larger objects.00:12

*** janonymous has joined #openstack-swift13:18
notmynameblair: if hardware is down for more than the reclaim age, then replication could resurrect date13:18
notmynameblair: eg if you have a server down with data on it, and someone sends a DELETE request for some data that lives on it, the rest of the cluster will be fine and will keep the tombstone around for reclaim_age seconds13:19
hayponotmyname: hi. let me see13:19
hayponotmyname: i fixed my patch "fix tox -e py27": pep8 & py34 now pass thanks to a hack (i'm "porting" pyeclib to python 3 in tox.ini)13:20
notmynameblair: but if reclaim_age has passed, the tombstone won't be there and when the failed server is brought back online with the old data, replication will see the .data file and dutifully replicate them throughout the cluster. if there aren't the tombstones, then the data will persist13:21
hayponotmyname: oops, the patch is called "fix tox -e py34" :-) py27 already works ;)13:21
haypoi just have a remaining bug on the py27 check job (LazyImporter)13:21
*** tellesnobrega_ has joined #openstack-swift13:21
notmynameblair: summary being, if your region has data on it and has been offline for more than reclaim_age, then you should reformat the drives and add them as new. if the region has been offline for less than reclaim_age, then you should be able to bring it online and swift will do the right thing13:22
notmynameblair: in your case, you say "a few months" and the devices all have zero weight. so they shouldn't have anything on them anyway. so it will be like adding a new region13:23

hrouHey All, wondering what anyone's thoughts are on this:  I've been playing around with ACL using the swift client, and the one thing that wasn't clear to me from reading the docs and the various tutorials online is:  When ACL (e.g. read perm) for container X in account Y is granted to user blah in account Z you need to use the --os--storage-url when trying to access the container from account Z.  For namespacing reasons its clear21:44
hrousomething like this is required but I wonder if it could be better documented somewhere ?  Or is it and I'm just not seeing it: )21:44
