sdaguedhellmann: did you ever get any resolution on launchpadlib being workable on python3?13:01
*** kumarmn has joined #openstack-release13:01
dhellmannsdague : I haven't circled back around to look at it but at some point someone (you?) pointed out that there was a new package that could be installed. It's still on my list for this cycle as part of consolidating the release tools we actually use into the releases repo, which seemed like it would be easier to do after the zuul v3 rollout because I could define the jobs that need to use those tools in a way that clones13:03
dhellmann that repo without building a pip installable package13:03
sdagueyeh, I was just trying to use it and there was a deep error in one of the included libs it looks like13:05
sdaguelike launchpadlib seems python3 clean now, but it's dependency stack is now13:05

dhellmannthe only thing we're using that for these days is to leave comments on bugs. I wonder how hard it would be to just write that much of the client.13:06

dhellmannthat's a new one13:07
smcginnisdhellmann: Interesting idea to just reimplement the functionality locally.13:09
smcginnisI would imagine we actually use a very small part of the code for our needs.13:10
dhellmannit depends on how complicated their auth process is13:10
smcginnissdague: Looks like that's probably due to this: https://github.com/FriendCode/gittle/issues/4913:10
dhellmannI'm not surprised a library last updated in 2009 does not work: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/oauth/1.0.113:12
dhellmannoh, those are some familiar names13:12
mordreddhellmann, smcginnis, ttx: if y'all get a sec, we need https://review.openstack.org/511643 (and https://review.openstack.org/511807) to fix an issue with nodepool image uploads on rackspace13:14
dhellmannwhat's the latest on the drive to move over to storyboard?13:14
dhellmannmordred : looking13:14
mordreddhellmann, smcginnis: also - yah - I'd imagine that just doing a quick python that uses oauth and implements just the bug bits you need would be not terribly hard13:15
smcginnisI'll defer to you on that on dhellmann.13:15
dhellmannmordred : I started thinking through it, and we'd have to update infra's secret management for whatever new thing we came up with, too13:15
mordreddhellmann: that's an interesting topic - because I kind of think that having the release team own and manage the secret data for the launchpad accountin the releases repo would be better than having infra own/manage it13:16
dhellmannI'd be fine with that, too, I guess, but that means it's still more work for us :-)13:17
mordred:)13:17
ttx+2 on shade release, will let our fearless PTL approve the Friday exception13:17
dhellmannI mean, do we want to patch over the lp thing being broken or do we want to move to an ecosystem where the tools are supported?13:17
dhellmannsame. smcginnis ^^13:18
mordreddhellmann: I'd say the second - but depending on the storyboard transition timeframe, the first still might be needed13:18
dhellmannwow, the oauth code is on code.google.com.13:18
dhellmannmordred : the only issue right now is that the tools need to be used under python 2. We have a couple of years before that's not supported upstream, and an undefined period where it will still be supported by the os vendor. I think that gives us enough time to finish a community goal to move to storyboard.13:19

smcginnisMaybe this could be a driver to get that storyboard transition moving.13:36
dhellmannyeah. we need a person to champion it.13:37
smcginnisWasn't there a group of folks doing that already? Or were they just on the implementation side?13:37
dhellmannthis feels like a pretty easy win, so ideally we would find someone not already loaded down with a ton of other commitments and help by providing a guide for them13:37
dhellmanninfra did some of it, and the storyboard team did. diablo_rojo was involved at one point, I think13:38
dhellmannbut when I think of the people involved, I see them as really busy with other things and don't want to dump this on them13:38
smcginnisMy feel is folks have been hearing about sb for awhile now, but unless they've gone out of their way to go to the session in Boston, they don't necessarily know what it is and why it's needed.13:38
smcginnisOr what it means to them.13:38
dhellmannit seems like a good opportunity for a new cross-project leader to emerge13:38
dhellmannyeah, education about the motivation will be a big part of the process13:39
smcginnisWe need some "eductional" activities out there.13:39
dhellmannwe should start soon so we're ready for next cycle13:39
smcginnisTo get people to know what it is, why it exists, and why they should be thinking about moving to it.13:39
smcginnisAnd at some point, I think we're just going to have to make a unilateral decision for everyone that openstack projects are now moving to sb.13:40

fungisdague: that's a good question... the import script sucks over bug status per project for the autocreated task status on the imported story and slurps in comments and assignees (and therefore prepopulates accounts), but i believe it's missing some of the metadata for actions like entries when a bug's status was changed from new to triaged to in progress, et cetera. it does have a model for treating14:36
fungisimilar state changes in sb as distinct from comments, so it's possible we can map those too if they're queryable in lp14:36
fungias for a community champion to drive communication and tracking for the migration, diablo_rojo has been doing that for the past ~year now14:37
fungicurrent plan is to propose a migration as a rocky cycle goal at the goals session in sydney, last i heard14:38
fungibut there have been a lot of projects migrating ahead of that as well14:38

sdagueI should know more pre summit, and be able to express what I think would be valuable to keep15:30
fungisdague: yeah, so the good news is that storyboard exposes similar (perhaps better) granularity around that metadata, the less-good news is that the import process doesn't (yet) pull/map similar data from lp15:32
fungias far as i've been able to tell15:32
fungibut the import script is idempotent and can be rerun multiple times for a project, so we can in theory tweak it and rerun it for already-imported projects too so we pull that in after the fact15:32

smcginnisI suppose that could be treated like a stable release, even though it is a new deliverable.17:14
smcginnisdhellmann: Any issue with that? ^17:14
smcginnismnaser, EmilienM: It's a Friday, so we don't want to release right now anyway. But if you want to propose a release for that, we can discuss there if there are any issues I'm not aware of with doing it that way.17:16
EmilienMgood news! thanks17:16
mnasersmcginnis thank you17:20
smcginnisEmilienM, mnaser: What would be the drawback of just starting with Queens?17:23
EmilienMsmcginnis: not being able to test puppet-vitrage on pike17:24
EmilienMsmcginnis: and maybe introduce regressions in the module17:24
EmilienMsmcginnis: make our users angry17:24
mnasergiven that it was tested in the pike cycle, we'd have to drop CI for it in stable/pike if we decide to release it in queens, so yeah17:24
EmilienM(by users, here I meant the users of puppet-vitrage, which probably are more operators)17:24
smcginnisEmilienM, mnaser: Works for me. Just had to ask the question. ;)17:25
EmilienMsure17:25
dhellmannsmcginnis : if the module was never released as part of pike, I think it's a bit odd to add it now. We set a deadline for new deliverables each cycle. If it's being added to an existing deliverable that might be a different case, though?17:29
dhellmannone alternative is to tag it as independent this cycle17:29
smcginnisdhellmann: Ah, so one release as independent, then pick it up in Queens along with the rest of the puppet deliverables? That could work.17:34
dhellmannyeah17:35
dhellmannit can still have the stable branch, etc.17:35
smcginnisEmilienM, mnaser: Does that make sense? ^17:35
mnaserits okay with me, thoughts EmilienM ?17:36
* smcginnis has to step away for a bit...17:36
EmilienMit's ok for me17:38
EmilienMas long as we can create a stable/pike branch17:38
EmilienMand run in CI17:38
EmilienMso we avoid regressions when deploying with Pike codebase. I'm happy then17:38
openstackgerritMohammed Naser proposed openstack/releases master: Release puppet-vitrage for Pike  https://review.openstack.org/51193117:40
mnaser^ release bits havent merged yet but im not yet confident in my release-fu so just leaving it up for review in advance17:41
dhellmannyeah, you can have the branch regardless of the release model17:41
dhellmannmnaser : for an independent release, you'll need to move that file to the deliverables/_independent directory. The result won't show up on the pike release series page, but it will be visible as an independent release17:42

dhellmannyou could also go ahead and create a file for queens that includes the top bits but no releases section17:42

smcginnisdhellmann: Have a moment for some questions?19:23
dhellmannsmcginnis : I'm here if you're still around19:41
smcginnisdhellmann: Hey! I may have some other ideas, but I was getting hung up on how to support RST inside the yaml deliverable files.19:44
smcginnisdhellmann: I think it was partly a formatting issue on my end.19:44
smcginnisdhellmann: I tweaked what I had in there and it seems to be OK now.19:44
dhellmannsmcginnis : the reno docs have some good examples19:46
dhellmannsmcginnis : https://docs.openstack.org/reno/latest/user/usage.html#note-file-syntax19:46
smcginnisdhellmann: The other fallback idea I was thinking of was to have a reno style setup under deliverables/queens with either just one file, or a file per $PROJECT.yaml file that we could just leverage some of the reno code to process, but I think I've got it now.19:46
smcginnisOr at least closer to the right path.19:46
smcginnisThanks, that helps!19:46
smcginnisI just had an extra space after a bullet list, so validate didn't like it.19:47
smcginniss/space/blank line/19:47
dhellmannoh, hmm, using reno is an interesting idea19:47
dhellmannthough it relies on branches and we don't have branches19:47
dhellmannso it's probably simpler to just build something small to render the data directly19:48
smcginnisThat's what I'm currently thinking.19:48
dhellmannhttps://pypi.python.org/pypi/sphinxcontrib.datatemplates might be useful19:48
smcginnisI think I can tie that into the docs job easily.19:48
dhellmannI don't remember if the datatemplates plugin knows how to pull data from more than one source, but we could also have separate calls for each project on the page that does the rendering19:51
dhellmannthat would let us control the ordering and grouping and whatnot19:51
smcginnisGood tip.19:53
dhellmannwe could also teach it to read multiple files :-)19:54
smcginnisI think one way or another I will need to have some sort of sphinx extension for this.19:55
