openstackMeeting started Wed Sep 18 14:00:02 2013 UTC and is due to finish in 60 minutes.  The chair is mestery. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot.14:00
openstackUseful Commands: #action #agreed #help #info #idea #link #topic #startvote.14:00
*** openstack changes topic to " (Meeting topic: networking_ml2)"14:00

*** rcurran has joined #openstack-meeting14:00
mesteryI don't have much on the agenda for today, so once we get through it, if others have items we can discuss those at that time.14:00
mestery#topic devstack14:01
*** openstack changes topic to "devstack (Meeting topic: networking_ml2)"14:01
mesteryThe only bug for ML2 with devstack is this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/devstack/+bug/122074514:01
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 1220745 in devstack "Change devstack to use the ML2 plugin instead of the OVS plugin by default" [Undecided,Confirmed]14:01
*** dcramer__ has quit IRC14:01
mesteryI have a patch for this, I just need to find time to do a bit more testing and push it out for review.14:01
*** Sukhdev has joined #openstack-meeting14:01
mesteryAny other devstack issues people are seeing?14:02
rkukurahttps://review.openstack.org/#/c/45565/14:02
mesteryrkukura: Thanks, for some reason I thought that one had already gone up. :)14:02
rkukurais the above still needed?14:02
Sukhdevyes, I see one :-)14:02
*** yassine has joined #openstack-meeting14:03
mesteryI think it is, right Sukhdev?14:04
SukhdevI tested twice with and without the patch and I do not see the problem either way14:04
*** amotoki has quit IRC14:04

rkukurain new clean VMs, or is the dependency already installed?14:05
*** ocozalp has joined #openstack-meeting14:06
Sukhdevin a new clean VM without dependency as well in a new clean VM with dependency - I did not see the issue14:06
*** yassine_ has quit IRC14:06
mesterySo we don't need this patch anymore? rkukura, have you verified this as well by any chance?14:07
SukhdevBut, since somebody saw the issue... it may have to do with some corner case issue14:07
rkukuraI think this would show up in testing mestery's patch to  switch the default if it is needed14:07
*** EmilienM has joined #openstack-meeting14:07
rkukuramestery: I have not tried with clean VM recently14:07
SukhdevYes, with mestery's patch I do see the problem14:08
mesteryMyself either.14:08
*** terriyu has joined #openstack-meeting14:08
Sukhdevthis has to do with the config14:08
mesterySukhdev: Can you explain further?14:08
*** sacharya has joined #openstack-meeting14:08
SukhdevIf I install mestery's patch and enable Arista patch and do not have a config file to go along with, everything goes in the wrong way14:09
*** doude has joined #openstack-meeting14:09
SukhdevI mean specify arista in localrc14:09
*** jmontemayor has joined #openstack-meeting14:09
mesterySukhdev: Did you set Q_PLUGIN_EXTRA_CONF_PATH and Q_PLUGIN_EXTRA_CONF_FILES to point it at the arista .ini file as well?14:10
mesteryAnd what do you mean it goes wrong, it doesn't work at all?14:10
rkukuraso only the arista driver requires jsonrpclib, right?14:10
*** martine_ has quit IRC14:10
Sukhdevmestery: no14:10

Sukhdevrkukura: yes14:10

*** julim has quit IRC14:12
Sukhdevmestery: I can go back and retest it with the config file options and report back via email14:12
mesteryYes, without those, Arista won't have it's config14:12
rkukuraSwitching devstack to use ml2 by default will not require this patch, so we can deal with these separately.14:12
*** ujuc has quit IRC14:13
mesteryrkukura: Agreed.14:13
*** ocozalp has left #openstack-meeting14:14
*** markmcclain has joined #openstack-meeting14:14
mesteryAnything else on devstack?14:14
rkukuraI think we are concluding that we can switch the devstack default without waiting for the other devstack patches, right?14:15
SukhdevSo, in terms ofhttps://review.openstack.org/#/c/45565/14:15
Sukhdevwhat is the conclusion?14:15
mesteryrkukura: Yes, I agree. I'll proceed with that approach then.14:16
rkukuraLets resolve ofhttps://review.openstack.org/#/c/45565/ in the review, and determine with it is sufficient, or we somehow need to make devstack load driver-specific dependencies14:16
mesteryrkukura: Agreed.14:17
Sukhdevsounds good14:17
mesteryAnything else devstack related?14:17
rkukurawhen can we expect mestery's patch?14:17
mesteryrkukura: I'll do my best to finish testing and send it out tomorrow.14:17
mesteryToday I'm swamped at LinuxCon, tomorrow is much better.14:18

BobBallWe do want to look at per-VM masking so you can migrate to a host with more features than the current host - but you'll never be able to migrate the other way.  And that'd need a Xen change.15:41

BobBallso the key is even if you're not using a "pool" we still have to verify the flags are the same in order to do bidirectional migrates15:43
BobBallnormally we'd do the check on pool-join so it would be _very_ obvious that you couldn't migrate between the two15:43
johnthetubaguyyeah, the non pool case is a bit manual15:44
ekarlsois it a bad thing to do or ?15:44
BobBallbut if you're using live migrate with Xen storage motion then that check occurs at run time when we check that the VM can go to the host15:44

MikeSpreitzerI'm looking for a bit of consensus on architecture.20:36
therveNova should grow some features20:36
therveWe'll be able to use them once it's exposed20:36
MikeSpreitzerHolistic scheduling is about scheduling a whole template at once, including all resources of all types potentially… that does not sound like nova to me.20:37

*** litong has quit IRC20:37
radixI can maybe see a reason to separate out the scheduler to be more generally useful in other contexts... maybe20:37
therveOkay20:37
MikeSpreitzer(I qualify "potentially" because some scheduling can and should be deferred to lower silos — when it has no interactions with other scheduling)20:37
radixbut I have not thought much about it20:37
shardyMikeSpreitzer: I think if the nova scheduler has to start caring about dependencies (between instances) then the logic should be in Heat20:37
*** litong has joined #openstack-meeting20:37
radixsome concrete use cases would be nice20:38
shardybut if it's "just" placement hints, then nova seems like an OK place to do it20:38

*** litong has quit IRC20:38
shardyotoh I did voice conerns about scope creep of this feature at the Havana summit..20:38
shardy(nova group scheduling)20:38
MikeSpreitzerYou want some VMs placed near each other, and Cinder volumes placed near them (if you are using direct attached storage)20:38
stevebakerMikeSpreitzer: so each api would need to take scheduler hints? Our native resources can use whatever gets exposed in the api20:39
MikeSpreitzerYes, each resource API should have a way to be told what the placement should be.  In fact, many already do.20:40
*** litong has joined #openstack-meeting20:40
MikeSpreitzerThe nova group scheduling is explicitly intended to be the basis for more development, but I think what we really need is not Compute specific20:41
therveThe fact is, we can't do anything about placement without support from the underlying projects20:41
MikeSpreitzerof course20:41
stevebakerMikeSpreitzer: so unless heat has to interact directly with a scheduler, this doesn't seem too controversial from a heat point of view20:42

shardyIt could even make life easier, ie implement ServerGroup resource which can automatically span compute nodes, instead of trying to do it ourselves in InstanceGroup20:43
MikeSpreitzerA holistic scheduler is something that would logically be prior to heat, if heat is merely infrastructure orchestration.  OTOH, if Heat grows to include software coordination, that is something that should be prior to holistic infrastructure scheduling.20:43
shardyMikeSpreitzer: do you have a link to a wiki page describing your vision of this?20:44
