yogitaHey everyone, I'm an outreachy applicant and trying to set up the openstack manila repository.19:32
yogitaI have cloned but not really able to follow the docs. So can you all help me with the next steps like how am I supposed to run the manila service?19:32

yogitaI'm guessing I'm supposed to get devstack running on my system?20:01
yogitaIf yes, is it really important to set it up on a VM or my machine dual booted with Ubuntu will do?20:01
gouthamrHi yogita . Welcome!20:38
gouthamrIt's a holiday for most of our contributors today - so responses may be delayed. What issues are you having with the setup?20:38
gouthamrI wouldn't advise installing devstack directly on your machine, even if you're doing a dual boot. There are many changes devstack will make to the machine it runs on that may not be desirable - and since you're just getting started, getting past those issues may be difficult. If you're working on a Windows/MacOS computer - you could use VirtualBox or VMWare Player to spin up an Ubuntu VM;20:41
yogitaUmmm alright but what do I do if I already have a dual booted machine with Windows and Ubuntu?20:56
yogitaWill I be still needing another Ubuntu VM? If yes, wouldn't that fire up things on my system? Like I have allocated 100 GB to Ubuntu and my RAM size is of 8GB and I intend to use Ubuntu as my development env20:58
gouthamryogita: I see - at any given point of time you have only one host OS (windows or Ubuntu - whatever you decide to use as your host) running.so I suggest create a devstack vm with 4 GB RAM if you’re21:13
gouthamrs/create/creating21:14
gouthamr... you’re worried about running out of resources21:14
yogitaOkay got it! I was just worried if spinning up a virtual instance of Ubuntu on a machine with specs as mine was recommended or not. But, now that you've addressed my concern, I'll go ahead and do it21:19
yogitaAlso, we need a VM for running devstack only right? The manila service has to be set up on my host OS only right?21:21
gouthamryogita: nope - devstack is an all-in-one OpenStack installation21:39
gouthamrWhich will include Manila21:40
gouthamrhttps://docs.openstack.org/manila/latest/contributor/development-environment-devstack.html21:40
gouthamrPlease follow the instructions here - I suggest using the sample LVM driver local.conf in that doc21:40
gouthamrThese instructions will ensure Manila is cloned as well as installed and run on the devstack VM21:41
