fzzf1hi vkmc, I have a question with manila replica.when I create replica,Can I choose a exist share as secondary share replica?11:27
*** raildo has joined #openstack-manila11:37
fzzf1I want know if share and replica are the same concept.when I create replica, does it will create a new share as a secondary replica? it means share and replica is the same thing, isn't it? https://docs.openstack.org/manila/latest/admin/shared-file-systems-share-replication.html  I find this from the page, when create replica, primary replica and secondary replica their share-id are the same11:37

dviroelfzzf1: hi, one share can have multiple share instances, and when replication is enabled, each share instance has a replica state. So yes, they are part of the same share-id, but they have different instance-ids.11:49
dviroelfzzf1: when retrieving info from a share that has replicas, manila will provide you information from the active instance. Manila has a API for share instances that will retrieve info from all replicas. Manila also has a API to promote a replica to Active.11:52

fzzf2dviroel,one share can have multiple share instances, how it create. it sounds like replica is share sub-concept12:34
*** ianychoi has quit IRC12:40
dviroelfzzf2: so every share has at least one instance, the active one. Replicas are instances of a share, that can be writable, readable or a disaster-recovery copy. It will depend which type the vendor supports. So Manila will create a new instance every time that a new replica is requested.12:50
fzzf2which command is query share instance? query share is using manila list, right? I can't understand the difference in share and share instance.12:59
dviroelfzzf2: manila share-instance-list13:01
dviroelfzzf2: share is the entity that represents a shared file system, with its characteristics, permissions and state. An instance is a physical shared volume at the storage. A replica is an instance too, i.e a copy in the storage system.13:02
dviroel'manila share-instance-show $instance-id' will give more details about an instance, like 'replica_state'13:05
dviroelfzzf2: 'share-replica-list' will also show a list of instances, but will filter the ones that don't support replication.13:08
fzzf2yes,I saw it,so replica create by one share is all instance, but use manila list only can see one share.and so secondary replica can't specify exist share or share instance13:13
fzzf2dviroel,Will replica be updated on timej13:15
dviroelmanila supports creation of new replicas only, you can't specify any existent share/instance as a replica of another share. If is what you were asking.13:20
dviroelthe replica update time depends on the storage/driver that you are using.13:22
fzzf2sorry,my description is not clear,it's it.13:24

fzzf2hi dviroel,I have another question plz :),Is command manage share must need the export path? as a user, maybe don't know which share is exist in backend, unless he is also the backend storage administrator.13:42
*** ianychoi has joined #openstack-manila13:44
dviroelfzzf2: hey, yes and it is expected to be an admin operation since it must know details about shares that exists in the backend.13:52
