surajpatil1hello team , my name is suraj and im looking for manila contribution . I will appreciate your help15:38
*** lpetrut has quit IRC15:48
gouthamrsurajpatil1: hey suraj, welcome! thanks for introducing yourself. I presume you've had a chance to look at the docs i shared earlier (https://docs.openstack.org/infra/manual/developers.html and https://docs.openstack.org/manila/latest/contributor/index.html)16:08
gouthamrsurajpatil1: and the links to bugs farmed out for new contributors here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/manila/+bugs?field.tag=low-hanging-fruit16:09
gouthamr https://bugs.launchpad.net/python-manilaclient/+bugs?field.tag=low-hanging-fruit16:09
gouthamr https://bugs.launchpad.net/manila-ui/+bugs?field.tag=low-hanging-fruit16:09
surajpatil1thnak you gouthamr . im reading those doc16:09
gouthamrsurajpatil1: ask us anything as you encounter issues/have a difficulty understanding stuff off these16:10
surajpatil1to start contribution i think doc correction will be good fit ? correct me if i wrong16:11
gouthamrsurajpatil1: sure, yes... we have a number of doc bugs - although some of them may not be ideal for a new contributor since they require you understanding the context...16:13
gouthamrsurajpatil1: you can find the doc bugs by looking here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/manila/+bugs?field.tag=doc16:14
gouthamrsurajpatil1: here's a good one to start: https://bugs.launchpad.net/manila/+bug/182183716:14
openstackLaunchpad bug 1821837 in Manila "[api-ref] user_id missing from create/show/manage share API reference" [Undecided,New] - Assigned to Jason Grosso (jgrosso)16:14

surajpatil1gouthamr,  https://bugs.launchpad.net/manila/+bug/1821837 someone already fixed it.16:20
openstackLaunchpad bug 1821837 in Manila "[api-ref] user_id missing from create/show/manage share API reference" [Undecided,New] - Assigned to Jason Grosso (jgrosso)16:20
gouthamrsurajpatil1: the bug was assigned, but not fixed - you can take over if you're interested - however, i suggest leaving a note on the bug that you're working on the fix and would like to take over16:22
surajpatil1ok gouthamr thank you16:23

markguz_Hi Manila folks, I've been looking in the docs to see if there's anyway to make a share both NFS and CIFS?20:04
vkmcmarkguz_, you want to use both protocols?20:04
markguz_vkmc: yes. we have many shares that are access by both nfs and cifs20:05
vkmcmarkguz_, what backend are you using?20:05
markguz_generic20:05
markguz_on our regular share servers we're just using linux with nfs + samba20:06
markguz_we have grid computers that mount the shares via nfs but end users with windows laptops who mount the same shares as samba20:07
vkmcmarkguz_, hmm, ok, it's not advised to use the generic driver for production20:08
vkmcit's quite flaky20:08
markguz_i don't have any special nas devices.20:09
markguz_just linux servers and/or windows servers20:09
vkmcmarkguz_, right, there are some other open source drivers you can use20:09
markguz_such as?20:09
vkmcit's ok though, trying to address your question20:09
vkmccephfs native/cephfs nfs20:09
markguz_vkmc: that's fine in our main location, but our secondary location does not have access to ceph. and that's where this particular setup is20:11
markguz_all i have there is regular LVM220:12
vkmck k20:13
vkmcso regarding your original question, I don't think there is a way to make a share both nfs and cifs20:15
markguz_i feared that. i'm surprised it's not a common use case20:17
vkmcthere are "workarounds" but they are not ideal20:17
vkmchmm20:17
vkmcfound this https://access.redhat.com/solutions/198320:18
vkmcdunno if you have rhel, but if it's a gnu/linux distro, it might apply as well20:18
markguz_it's rhel, and it's been running for years like this with no issues20:19
vkmcoh cool20:19
vkmc:)20:19
markguz_i suppose i could try and get the windows users to mount the nfs on their systems. It's probably easier these days with 10.20:19
markguz_and given that bug you showed me, maybe we're living on borrowed time with the cifs/nfs mash up. :-)20:21
markguz_vkmc: thanks for the info20:22
vkmcmarkguz_, sorry I couldn't been more helpful20:48
vkmclogs are public though, so if someone can provide more insight on this... please do20:48
vkmcgouthamr, ^ ganso ^20:48
vkmcjust pinging a few20:49
markguz_vkmc: thanks20:49
gouthamrhi markguz_ - no, there's no way to get a multi-protocol (NFS/CIFS) share via manila20:55
markguz_gouthamr: ok thanks for the confirmation20:57
gouthamrmarkguz_: np, the request has come up a few times before... Manila doesn't provide you a way to manage individual file/folder permissions within a share - so theoretically, it could support multi-protocol - but, vendors opined that multi-protocol access turns out to be a nightmare when user and group permissions are messed with.20:59
markguz_gouthamr: it is a nightmare. i force everything to the correct group via the smb config. that way the windows and linux permissions stay the same21:00
markguz_that plus "chmod +s /rootofshare" seems to keep it ok21:01
markguz_from a linux pov21:01
gouthamrmarkguz_: true, isn't using NFS on windows (or CIFS on linux) an option for you?21:01
markguz_gouthamr: yes, particularly now everyone is on Windows 10 it should be easy to just dispense with the CIFS share21:02
vkmcgouthamr++21:02
markguz_i'd rather keep the linux servers mounting nfs, it's just cleaner21:03
gouthamrtrue that..21:03
markguz_ok. thanks the help folks21:05
markguz_*for21:05
gouthamryou're welcome, markguz_21:05
