Kennanfrom here I can not find magnum project listed, it may cause one issue, I not sure, but think it can. when query bp in magnum, it can not find in openstack bps00:04
KennanI discussed that with tchaypo yesterday00:04
Kennanit may related with that00:05
* tchaypo waves00:05
Kennanmagnum not listed in https://launchpad.net/openstack00:05
Kennanprojects00:05
Kennananteaya do you know who can add that in https://launchpad.net/openstack ?00:05
anteayaKennan: my suggestion would be to talk to someone in magnum00:06
anteayasdake: is that you?00:06
anteayaand ensure they have followed the steps in http://docs.openstack.org/infra/manual/creators.html#set-up-supervisors-for-your-project00:06
sdakeanteaya wound me00:06
Kennananteaya oh, I thought it would for cloud-admins , let me check with sdake00:07
tchaypoanteaya: to summarise - when “partially implements bp blah” is added to the commit message on a magnum change (https://review.openstack.org/#/c/184975/ is an example) it creates a link to https://blueprints.launchpad.net/openstack/?searchtext=api-microversions - but that doesn’t find the bp in question, which I *think* is related to the fact that00:07
tchaypohttps://launchpad.net/openstack doesn’t list magnum as a project00:07
sdakeanteaya I dont have appropriate permissions00:07
sdakeonly adrian does - I've asked him to make the drivers team the maintainer of the launchpad00:07
sdakeso people can fix these problems00:07
sdakebut he is either travelling or afk every time I ask :(00:07
sdakemaybe someone on the infra team can yell at him ;-)00:08
Kennansdake ok so it need adrian to do that ?00:08
sdakekennan only the maintainer of the launchpad can set "Part of"00:09
sdakewhich is the field that needs setting00:09
anteayasdake: ah okay thanks00:09
sdakein typical openstack projects, the maintainer is the drivers team00:09
sdakebut we have an open drivers team00:09

Kennanright ?00:11

tchaypoKennan: I can’t answer that, I don’t know how any of this works00:11
anteayaand the permissions to help you achieve your goal is understood by sdake but he has no permissions to assist00:12

fungiright now, aside from adrian otto, the members of the magnum-drivers group have the potential to collectively lobby to launchpad admins and ask them to turn over control of the project entry on the grounds that the listed owner has abandoned it/them, but that's really about it00:24

mordredthat seems way less usable to me - but if that's the 'right' way to do it, ok15:41

jeblairmordred: how is that less usable?15:42
fungidguerri: for example, rackspace gives us a fixed address on our instances, and that address is globally routable and (if not blocked via packet filters) reachable from the entire internet15:42
jeblairmordred: it allows the calling context to completely define what to do with the logs, while still retaining the ability to "just print them to the screen" with one line of code.15:42
fungidguerri: but i still think it's much better to separate the concepts of "reachable" from various places and whether that's accomplished by direct routing, address translation, et cetera15:42

mordredjeblair: I guess - it just seems opaque and confusing to me - but that's probably my issue and not a problem with the approach15:43

jeblairmordred: it's pretty simple -- libraries should not have to care about where logs go.  they just send log data into the logging system.  apps decide where log data goes (to the screen?  to a log file?  to /dev/null?).  the logging module provides a lot of complex ways apps can choose to format and route data, but it also provides a simple one-liner (basicConfig) for the "just print them out" case.15:47
mordredjeblair: totally - I hear that. the problem is probably that I've been fighting the 100 openstack libraries and what I want  to do is "print out the debug messages from shade and not the 100 bazillion messages from the other libraries"15:48
mordredjeblair: but I want to do that in literally every script I write15:48
jeblairmordred: if, contrary to that, libraries do something more that just submit log data (ie, if they try to format it or output it), there is nothing the app writer can do to stop it.  if i used shade in an app like gertty, it would just start printing things to the screen randomly and i would have no way to stop that.15:49

mordredso having to add complex logging invocations to those makes the library harder to use ... (although I totally grok and now agree with your argument)15:51
jeblairmordred: you could do that; especially if you expect shade to grow more scripts, it makes sense for them to use a shared helper method that could be public.  for your own bevy of scripts you might also consider having logging loads its config from a file; i think that can be a one liner, and the complexity is in the file.15:52

fungiOdd_Bloke: well, i'm pretty sure in your tox.ini you can adjust what that coverage job uses as its basis17:20
jeblairmordred: probably so; i mean to generalize: we should provide correct error messages to users when we know them.  when we catch an exception that we are expecting (not my favorite pattern; probably only things like EOFError or something should really fit this bill), no need to log it; but when an unexpected exception happens, we shouldn't mask it from the user because it's usually the lowest level one that actually provides the answer17:20
mordredyah17:20
mordredjeblair: I agree17:20
jeblairmordred: of course, that's in contradiction with "shade should abstract exception classes of underlying libs" which is why we have the debug compromise17:20

nibalizerhttp://git.openstack.org/cgit/openstack-infra/project-config/tree/zuul/layout.yaml#n24317:51
mordredkrotscheck: the other is what nibalizer is talking about - which is where we can have templates of pipeline associations17:51

krotscheckOk, so hypothetically speaking:17:52
nibalizermordred: ++17:52
krotscheckI create a job group that creates a few jobs from existing job templates. ex: gate-{{project}}-npm-run-test17:52
krotscheckI then go into the zuul layout and add a -name: npm-jobs with the appropriate pipelines into which those jobs go.17:53
krotscheckAnd then I go into my project and say: template: -name: npm-jobs17:53

The structure returned from gerrit doesn't appear to include the commitMessage field unless you specifically ask for it by adding the --commit-message flag. Is this a bug or am I missing some config somewhere that makes this default?18:05
mordredkrotscheck: well, the group is there in your current patch to allow you to reference both run-lint and run-test18:05
mordredkrotscheck: which is a good use of a job-group18:05
mordredso that each of the uses of it for different projects can just use npm-jobs in their jjb18:06
mordredkrotscheck: you still have to create gate-horizon-npm-run-test and gate-horizon-npm-run-lint in jjb ultimate- then they exist and can be associated with different pipelines in which to run in layout.yaml18:07

*** dannywilson has quit IRC23:23
dguerriwell IPv6 is not much different, I think. The only weird thing about it is that IPv6 addressing is completely unrelate to the IPv4 addressing. So you can have fixed addresses that are global routable IPv6 and still use floating for IPv423:23
*** dannywilson has joined #openstack-infra23:23
mordredand I do confirm that the ipv6 address you get from dreamhost is globally routable23:24
mordredeven though it's on a subnet that's attached to a network marked router:external23:24
mordredso - from what I can tell, the metadata is valid for ipv4 and everything is different for v623:24

dguerrimordred: the more we revel in the magic, the more I am convinced we need a configuration settings. per vendor, with a default23:37
dguerridreamiest config for IPv6 is just broken. but I guess it works23:38
dguerriand AFAIK you don't have a gateway for a net with router:external=False23:38
dguerriso probably they are using an "external" gateway... not managed by openstack23:39
mordreddguerri: the gateways are on the subnets23:39
mordreda network is not a network23:39
dguerrigod... why?23:39
mordreda network is a thing that has one ore more subnets23:39
mordredand each subnet is actually the network23:39
dguerriplease allow me to try this at home23:40
mordreddguerri: so - I think we can code in the logic, and I think we should, because I don't think that a user should need to specify 12 things about their cloud before things work -a nd there are clouds out there we don't know about23:41

mordreddguerri: I think a config setting that is an optimization around the discovery code23:42
mordreddguerri: sounds like a fine idea23:42
dguerrimordred: I could have totally missed the problem... but logic won't work for dreamhost IPv623:43
mordreddguerri: well, logic is always the thing that we reverse engineer from the clouds we se23:44
dguerriunless you mean using the globally routable check23:44
mordreddguerri: well, I think right now our experience is "if the cloud gives you ipv6, it's globally routable"23:44
mordredregardless of what anything else says23:45
fungiwe use the term "logic" loosely in this channel23:45
mordredas we have not seen any examples to the contrary23:45
mordredand, why in the heck would a provider go to the trouble of giving you ipv6 and then having it be non-routable?23:45
dguerrimordred: private clouds23:45
mordreddguerri: sorry, I'm using globally routable poorly again23:46
mordreddguerri: "routable off of the cloud"23:46
mordreddguerri: although I think they're wrong, I can see why people would give ipv4 addresses on private clouds that are not routable off that cloud23:47
*** bradjones is now known as bradjones_away23:47

*** tjones1 has quit IRC23:50
mordreddguerri: sure. however, for now, I think we should assume ipv6 is routable, and wait until we encounter a bug from someone before we try to get fancier with it23:50
*** dboik_ has quit IRC23:50
mordredsince we currently have no known use cases for handling private ipv6 - but we do have to deal with just about all the other routable ipv4 issues23:51
dguerriYes. I think you made a good point about IPv6 provisioned by OpenStack... in the end there is no NAT for IPv6 so we play a completely different game with it (fixed-floating IPv4)23:52
