dmzmorning y'all! I have a multi-region configuration and when logging into horizon there is a dropdown selector with region and a list of my regions.  it doesn't matter which i select I always goto the 1st one listed in the horizon config; and similar when selecting a tenant it ways defaults to the 1st region in the horizon config and not the region i was last in; any suggestions for these?15:00

david-lyledmz:  the purpose of the dropdown on the login page is which keystone endpoint you are authenticating to. The services region you're viewing one logged in is for regions reported by that keystone endpoint in the service catalog15:55
david-lylethey are doing very different things15:56
dmzcoulnd't it be impled that by logging into one region you want to be in that region?15:56
david-lyleit could or couldn't15:56
dmzhow can i disable the dropdown?15:56
dmzit's confusing to customers15:56
david-lylethere's no guarantee when logging in to a specific keystone endpoint that it will have service regions that match that region15:57
dmzbut if a customer is logging in to manage their tenant in region2 and they select region2 but then it logs in & goes to region1, it's confusing15:57
dmzdoesn't matter that they authenticated against region2, they are seeing instances for region1; just confusing imoho15:58
*** lhcheng has joined #openstack-horizon15:58
david-lylein the past (for downstream use) we've put logic in settings to strip out all endpoints for the non-closest keystone endpoint15:58
david-lyledmz,  the problem is Horizon can't assume the region structure under your keystone endpoints15:59
david-lylethey are just string values15:59
david-lyleyou can set up the topography however you want15:59
dmzbut can't i just manually say these are my regions but use this one to logon with? especaily if my url is globally load balanced15:59
david-lyledmz, not currently16:00
dmzif the dropdown isn't doing what my end-users think; then i just want to disable it; is there an option to remove the selection?16:00

david-lyledmz, if both (all) your keystone endpoints are reporting the same service catalog, one you auth to one, there is no need to change keystone endpoints. switching projects at the top of the page with rescope your token to a different project, but will go through the same keystone endpoint. The region selection is just a filter. To tell the rest of the pages which set of endpoints to communicate with16:17

dmzok so i'll lay with that; now gotta figure out the changes that were made to make the region sticky; i already had to do one patch to django that wasn't in the ubuntu debs; thanks y'all16:19

krotscheckdavid-lyle: I'm not saying it's a solution that will make package maintainers happy.16:38

krotscheckdavid-lyle: Looks like the discussion on the user survey group is starting off. I'm trying to figure out exactly what piece of data we want to collect. Is it enough for us to ask: Hey do you customize horizon? Do we want to know how many engineers they have on staff working on customizing horizon?20:35
*** ramishra has joined #openstack-horizon20:35
* krotscheck is curious on whether they have custom user interfaces that are _not_ horizon.20:35
david-lyledoug-fish: go for it, not sure20:36
david-lylekrotscheck: not how many, but maybe how they customize it20:36
david-lyleadded content vs changing integrated content20:36
krotscheckdavid-lyle: Templates changes vs. forking vs. Build-from-scratch?20:37
david-lylekrotscheck: well we have a plugin mechanism that is non-invasive20:37
david-lylebeyond that you can alter the code in a bunch of ways20:37
doug-fishdavid-lyle: are you talking about the customization plugin?20:38
*** mwhagedorn has joined #openstack-horizon20:38
krotscheckdoug-fish: In a manner of speaking. We're trying to figure out how Horizon's actually deployed, and how much customization is done by customers.20:38
krotscheckdoug-fish: So we're trying to get a question on the user survey that captures that question as succinctly as possible.20:39
doug-fishgot it20:39
david-lyledoug-fish: customization module is one way of altering existing content via code20:39
david-lyleif the plugin mechanism and new theming mechanism is most of what is used, that makes our life easier20:40
david-lylebut I know of several cases where the customization goes much deeper than that20:40
doug-fishyeah, me too20:40
krotscheckDitto.20:40

doug-fishI have the problem of independent plugin writers who want all of their code to work independently and/or together, but they change the same code points via a customization module.20:41
dfisherif there are bugs with the xstatic-magic-search pypi package, where should bugs be filed?20:41
david-lylekrotscheck: is this too open-ended: "What is the key feature missing from horizon that you've had to implement?"20:42
*** Piet has joined #openstack-horizon20:42
krotscheckdavid-lyle: I like that question. I think it'd get rejected from the User Survey, but they _did_ recommend we throw together a completely separate survey and post it to the operators list.20:42

mgagneis there a way to configure a policy file per service AND region ?22:19
openstackgerritTravis Tripp proposed openstack/horizon: Refactor angular cloud services utilities  https://review.openstack.org/17951622:20
david-lylemgagne: per service yes, per region, no22:20
mgagnealright, thanks22:20
david-lyleyou would have to do some hacking22:21
mgagneof course22:21
david-lylenot terrible22:21
david-lyleis if for say dev vs prod environment?22:21
mgagnewell, the challenge is that it looks like _get_enforcer doesn't have access to the region name22:21
david-lylejust trying to figure out the use case22:21
mgagnedavid-lyle: no, all prod22:21
mgagnedavid-lyle: I can already make it different for dev vs prod22:22
david-lyledifferent policies in different regions22:22
mgagneyep22:22
david-lylehmmm22:22
mgagneno rush, I will check that out later22:24
david-lylemgagne: _get_enforcer would have to be augmented to support setting the region scope as well as the service22:25
david-lylenot a huge deal22:26
david-lylecan you file a bug?22:26
mgagneyep, and _user_to_credentials to expose the region somehow22:26
david-lylewell it's in the request22:26
mgagneyep, somewhere in services_region22:26
mgagneI guess22:26
david-lyleso check has access and just needs to use it to narrow the scope22:27
mgagnetrue22:27
david-lylehttps://github.com/openstack/horizon/blob/master/openstack_dashboard/policy_backend.py#L13122:27
mgagneI'm just not sure how to make it happens in local_settings.py, mainly the syntax22:27
david-lyleyeah, that will need to change22:27
david-lylehard part will be conditionally supporting per region22:28
david-lyleif you file the bug, I'll take a crack at it22:28
david-lylethe code actually lives in django_openstack_auth now22:28
david-lylejust haven't removed the old code in horizon repo yet22:29
mgagnedavid-lyle: I'm not sure how people like dict() of any type. you could have a dict of strings (no region support) or a dict of dict for region support22:29
mgagnewhere key is region name and value the file name22:29
*** jbell8 has quit IRC22:29
mgagnedavid-lyle: which project should I open the bug against? is it horizon or is there a dedicated project for django_openstack_auth?22:30
david-lyleor a setting to concat the region name onto the service key22:30
david-lylehorizon is fine22:30
mgagnefound https://launchpad.net/django-openstack-auth22:30
david-lylethat works too22:30
mgagnedavid-lyle: until you have region or service with special characters, mainly the separator character22:31
david-lyleyou'll have to hardcode the region info into local_settings.py22:32
openstackgerritEric Peterson proposed openstack/horizon: Improve help content for lbaas pool create  https://review.openstack.org/17995922:32
mgagnedavid-lyle: true which is more or less a "good" compromise for me22:32
david-lyleyou'll lose the dynamic nature, but probably not a huge impact in production22:32
mgagnedavid-lyle: until someone come up with the idea of storing the policy file in keystone and then I'm stuck with no solution at all for the next year =)22:33
